An Interview with Music Director of Tulu Movie Shakalaka Boom Boom - Dolwin Kolalagiri

Shakalaka Boom Boom, is a Tulu horror comedy film scheduled to be released this December 16, 2022. It is directed by the youngest director of the Coastalwood film industry Mr. Shrisha Yellare and has been produced by Mr. Nithyananda Narasinge and Mr. Umesh Prabhu Manibettu.

The title track of the movie is all set to be released on October 22, 2022 at 6:06 pm on JustRoll Films YouTube Channel. During this occasion we have interviewed the Music Director of the movie, also Singer of the title track - Mr. Dolwin Kolalagiri, who has a few interesting stories to share with our readers.

Hello Sir, could you please give us a brief introduction about yourself and your journey into the music industry so far?

Hello, I am Dolwin and I was born in Udupi, in a quaint town called Kolalagiri. I am mostly known as Dolwin Kolalagiri, and the main reason for that is the musical link between these two words – ‘Dol’ from my name Dolwin– which means Drum and relates to rhythm, ‘Kolalu’ from Kolalagiri, which translates to flute, and relates to Melody. I strongly believe that only when rhythm and melody are mixed in the right proportion, it creates beautiful Music. One of the senior artists from North Karnataka is the one who suggested this to me and thereafter I officially referred to myself to as Dolwin Kolalagiri for the sake of music.

I entered the music industry in the year 2002, as a musician for live shows, played in several local bands, eastern shows, restaurant shows, and many more. I have been privileged to share my stage with eminent Indian playback singers like Kunaal Ganjawala, Anuradha Bhat, Rajesh Krishnan, Shamitha Malnad,

Dr. Chaitra, Indian music director and singer Gurukiran and many more. I have also worked with the popular Musical Composer Mr. Ravi Basruru who has recently contributed to KGF Kannada Movie . Mr. Ravi is my programming Guru, who has taught me how to implement my music knowledge into a programming session. I had spent a year in 2007 with him and since 2008 my journey towards music arrangement and composing began.

Is this your first music direction for a horror movie?

My debut horror music composition and background scoring was done for a Kannada movie, directed by Mr. Bharath Krishna, who hails from Mangalore, which is yet to be released. Shakalaka Boom Boom is my second horror movie project, and it is scheduled to be released before my first project.

What was the most challenging part of your project work? How did you overcome it?

Usually in horror movies, the content is mostly horror and it carries throughout the whole movie from beginning till the end. But the uniqueness of Shakalaka Boom Boom is that it is a mixture of comedy, romance, grows into horror and then action as well. To balance everything was indeed a challenging task and I must mention that the Director of the movie Mr. Shrisha Yellare has been instrumental, supportive and guided me throughout the project.

Any fun incidents during the process of music direction you would like to share with our readers?

There haven’t been any funny incidents, though I would like to mention lighter moments we had when every time I send my work to the director to get his feedback, his phone hanged. I wish he gets a brand-new phone before the release of the movie.

What is your message for the aspiring young generation who would love to become music directors in future?

My only message for aspiring music directors is this – we need to give importance to the roots. With the advancement of technology, we must not forget the basics – be it western, eastern, classical or any kind of music, we must have the basic knowledge, the foundation that can make you grow without any limit. It is believed that we can produce music without a keyboard, and I do not deny it. But with the proper foundation and knowledge of the basics, sky is the limit, it will only help you more in your journey and make it easier and professional at the same time, without getting you stumped.

Also, my advice for the young generation is to be versatile and work in various genres, keep learning without limiting yourself. Each genre, be it in Eastern or Western music is unique and has its own place in the music industry. It is always good to know more about them and try to understand them, which will be helpful for your career in the future without a doubt.

Thank you, Sir, for your valuable time, and for sharing your interesting experience with us, and we look forward for the release of the movie and the songs, and we wish you and the entire team of Shakalaka Boom Boom all the very best.

We look forward to seeing a huge crowd for the movie to be released on 16th December 2022!
